We should read the title of "Maiden Serenade" as showcasing not only a maiden expedition into the adult world for protagonist Marisa Rubin, but also a commanding arrival onto the literary scene by first-time novelist Richard Hurowitz. With the charm and lyricism of a black and white movie of the 1940's, Mr. Hurowitz twirls gracefully through the operas, art galleries, charity functions and island resorts that decorate the exclusive social set of Manhattan's Upper East. But while the author writes with a photographer's eye for detail and composition, this novel never resorts to distracting its reader with ornament. In fact, unlike other recent offerings by twentysomething writers, Mr. Hurowitz possesses a rare knack for capturing genuine dialogue, interpersonal relationships, and emotional development instead of falling back on cliched gimmicks or expressionless prose. The pacing is impeccable - getting your attention from the outset and leaving you interested beyond the final page. Perhaps most impressive is Mr. Hurowitz's choice to channel his natural narrative ability into a female's perspective, which he pulls off seamlessly. And most refreshing is this writer's ability to convey a sincerely optimistic and romantic world view without being flowery, to employ wit without being bogged down by cynicism. It is this reviewer's recommendation that everyone enjoy the uplifting story of Marisa Rubin's foray into adulthood, and look for further serenades by Mr. Hurowitz.
Excellent book- Highly recommended!!! A must read!!!
