An incredible story

China's transition to a market economy and associated social consequences might be one of the important stories in the next decade. Unfortunately, while this story is important, it is not well known. In part, this must be blamed on the nature of China's market transition: much of it was done behind closed doors. This fact makes Robert Lawrence Kuhn's book all the more valuable, for him, through in-depth interviews with people at all levels, has penetrated beyond this haze to give us the real story of the capitalist transition in China. I have been living China for thirty years before coming to the States for a MBA program, it is amazingly enough for me that how people from entrepreneurs to unemployed workers to senior government officials are so open to him about their political/economic motives and concerns. Very often, observers of the China tend to focus on political issues, while this book explains important developments which have reshaped the China economy and society and will exert their influence for years to come. Overall, MADE IN CHINA is an incredible story told with exceptional clarity by Robert Lawrence Kuhn A great read, this book, and wholeheartedly recommended.

Fascinating Feelings

Feelings more than facts fill this insightful book on China, a vital resource for anyone -- from diplomat to businessperson to student -- who wants to truly understand this most important country about which Americans, sadly, are quite ignorant. Kuhn, it seems, has been working in China with three eyes, one of which he uses to watch himself work! I really began to think that I too knew all these Chinese people whose voices are heard throughout the book. What emerges is clearly understood and wonderfully told.

China Revealed

Intermixing personal stories, current facts, organizing theories, and diverse opinions, Made In China reveals China as I have not seen before, even though I think I have read every serious book published about China in recent years. Why, I asked myself? I think the reason is Kuhn's personal experiences and his keen observational and analytical skills, accented by his easy and non-aggrandizing style. There are even a few surprises - his observations about the future of communism and "tofu" come to mind. He scrapes away veneer and digs underneath surfaces, and what emerges is fascinating and revealing.

A unique perspective

"Made in China" is neither propagandistic nor academic. Author Robert Kuhn offers a unique perspective of economic life in the new China. His probing questions of a wide variety of interviewees offers a vision of China not found elsewhere. Kuhn's experience in China is hands-on and more than a decade long. He shills neither for Beijing or Washington. China is struggling at every level to deal with the tensions that arise naturally from the burgeoning free market economy coupled with authoritarian government. Kuhn interviews people at all levels of responsibility to provide us with a unique picture of a nation in transformation. Many of their responses are surprisingly bold. One thing is certain, no matter what your view of China going in, you'll never see it the same way after you've read Kuhn's book.

Diversity in the New China

I thought I knew China -- until I read Made In China. Even though I've been to China many times I now realize that I didn't, couldn't, really understand what was going on there. Sure, I've seen the dramatic economic improvements and I've heard about the problems (human rights, etc.), but Made In China casts the Middle Kingdom into an entirely new light. No book on China is quite like it. The energy, dynamism and hope is palpable as you listen to all the diverse "Voices from the New Revolution" (the actual subtitle), and the diversity of people, views, opinions is remarkable! Western media gives little appreciation of such differences. Made In China is a revelation.
