Well illustrated but lacking in vibrancy

Almost square in format, this slim book produced to accompany a touring exhibition of 2002 features art work from the Smithsonian American Art Museum; it includes mainly paintings but also some three dimensional work. It is illustrated in colour throughout; the images are presented on the right-hand page with a brief but informative description or commentary on the facing page. The image often fills the page and occasionally occupies a page and a half, excepting the four pages allotted to George Catlin's portraits and figure paintings, where there are four images per page. There are over 60 works in total presented here; the works being arranged alphabetically by artist. In addition to the many Catlin there are several works by Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran and Joseph Henry Sharp; represented by two works each are Ernest Blumenschein, E Martin Hennings and Edward Kemeys, and included among those with just one piece are Oscar Edmund Berninghaus, Eanger Irving Couse, W Herbert Dunton, Victor Higgins, Remmington and Walter Ufer. The book is attractively laid out, and the generally brief text invites reading. My only complaint is that the colour reproduction is somewhat dull and flat, and compared with the same images reproduced in other publications they lack the vibrancy.
