I have discovered the perfect gift! A young Englishman whom I had never met before came to visit me at my waterfront house on Canada's Pacific coast and presented me with one of the most delightful house presents I have ever been lucky enough to receive. It is a simple little volume, 4.5" x 7", that you can tuck right into your pocket or slide under the pillow on your bed, with a glossy, dark green dust cover that has an enticing Victorian painting of a young man and woman gazing over a ballustrade at a glistening pool of water, surrounded by green trees. Above the picture on the cover are the words "The Illustrated Poets", and below the picture in large letters, "LOVE POEMS". Who can resist? The book itself is well bound in dark green too, and handsomely printed. The contents consist of 19 exquisite love poems by well known masters of that genre, some of them familiar, all of them enchanting. The authors range from William Shakespeare, of course, and John Donne, Blake, both Brownings, and more, concluding with Emily Dickinson, Thomas Hardy, William Butler Yeats, and Robert Frost. Each poem is accompanied by a beautiful colored illustration, some of them as well known as Botticelli's "Birth of Venus", but most of them delicious discoveries, such as Nathan Fielding's romantic moonlit "Landscape at Night". This is a volume to treasure.
