Book Overview

Adored by the likes of Amy Sedaris, Madonna (who optioned the film rights), and Gordon Lish, Love Junkie is Robert Plunket's cult novel of the heady heyday of gay New York at the dawn of the AIDS epidemic: scandalously long out of print, it is now gloriously reissued for a new generation of readers.

Mimi Smithers, a modern-day Emma Bovary, is a fortyish suburban housewife who has an eye for d cor and dreams of hosting lavish cocktail parties...

BE PREPARED TO LAUGH OUT LOUD...

THIS IS A FUNNY, FUNNY BOOK. IT IS INTELLIGENT AND THE LAYERS OF HUMOR ARE AMAZING. THIS MAN IS TALENTED. IN FACT I CAME ON LINE THIS MORNING TO FIND MORE THAT HE HAS WRITTEN. DON'T MISS THIS BOOK. IT IS A CHANCE TO LAUGH OUT LOUD. ENJOY... PLEASE JUST GET IT.

Brilliant, Nasty Fun!

The reviewer for Kirkus read the same plot as I did but managed to miss the fun. Sad for her. Every page of this book has nasty barbs buried in it. There are so many, in fact, that though I've read this book three times, I can still be shocked by how blind, how malicious the narrator can be as she blunders her way to the top. Robert Plunket is one of my favorite writers. If you have a taste for sarcasm and awful behavior, if you can actually pay attention to what narration actually says about the character of the narrator which remains unknown to them, he might be one of your favorites, too. Much Gay fiction is trashy. This is great fiction about trashy people doing trashy things. It is brilliantly, deftly written. It is shocking. It is appalling. It is consistently hilarious.

The Second Funniest Novel I Have Read...

...the FUNNIEST being Plunket's first novel MY SEARCH FOR WARREN HARDING. This novel again will have readers laughing their socks off. Each page is more delightful than the one preceding it. Plunket really knows how to create truly eccentric (an not so likable) characters. But who said the hero (or in this case the heroine) of a novel has to be likable. Having lived and come out as a gay man in the 1980's in New York I can relate to a lot of the incidents and characters in the book. I've known my share of Mimis along with some of the others. A funny book that is hard to find but don't pass up the chance to buy a copy if you happen across one.

Hilarious View of Gay 80s NYC from Outsider's View

This book is one of the 3 or 4 laugh out loud funny books I have ever read. I think it is best appreciated by gay men who lived through the 1980s and have a broad sense of humor.
