Seventeen-year-old Rita Formica overcomes formidable obstacles to be reunited with her own true love. This description may be from another edition of this product.
I read this book as a 13-year-old. Eleven years later, I'm buying the set, because these books stayed on my mind. This novel is well-written, charming, and a quirky/bittersweet coming-of-age story. Though the relationship in the book is between a teenage girl and an older man, it is handled maturely and from a much more emotional/romantic standpoint than a physical one. The character of Rita continues to develop in her own right in this sequel, and throughout the books becomes a strong woman capable of making her own decisions and respecting herself for who she is. Frankly, I'd rather a young woman read this portrayal of imperfect love that one has to work to maintain/improve than read any one of the multitude of formulaic, churned-out, fairy-tale romances for teenagers. I'd recommend this book to any intelligent teenage girl - it's a far, far healthier relationship model than the stalkerish behavior of the Twilight series.
