Easier to read version

The writings of Pope John Paul II can be difficult to understand for the everyday reader. And at 136 pages, this is definitely a more accessible version of JP2's wordy book. While "A Simplified Version" doesn't have an imprimatur (the Catholic Church's "seal of approval"), Walsh can't stray very far from the Pope's own words: "A Simplified Version" basically consists of the key thoughts, in everyday language, of each paragraph in the Pope's original text. Topics covered include the sexual urge in humans, romantic love, modesty, chastity, marriage, etc. Of particular interest to me was the analysis of the true meaning of the word "shame." It has certainly gotten a bad rap in recent years. "Love and Responsibility: A Simplified Version" is recommended for those readers that aren't quite ready to commit to reading the Pope's original book but want to know more about his theology of the body.

Love and Responsibility, written in the late 1950s by a then-obscure Polish academic named Karol Wojtyla, was the product of an intriguing intellectual collaboration between a priest-philosopher and his students, who were often his penitents as well. The book's analysis of the ethics of sexual love would later provide the philosophical foundation for Pope John Paul II's "theology of the body," which has drawn increasing attention as a powerful Christian counterproposal to the claims of the sexual revolution. Love and Responsibility is not, however, an easy read; Monsignor Vincent Walsh has done a service by providing this "simplified version," an outline of the argument of Love and Responsibility written in language that nonspecialists can engage.
