A science fiction anthology where relationships, either involving romance or other connections, figure largely in the stories. I first read this book over twenty years ago when I was in high school, and the review by Roxie Stardust pretty much mirrors how I felt about it back then. It left such a long lasting impression that I decided to track down another copy while collecting some other entertaining literature to help brace myself for this year's winter. To my delight, the stories held up well over my passing years, with the Joan D. Vinge tale being the best of the bunch. There are nine stories divided equally under three headings: Love and Time, Love and Technology, and Love and Other Worlds. If the words Science Fiction conjure up images of Gil Gerard in a tight fitting jumpsuit, the first three stories will be a pleasant surprise. These are, in my opinion, more in the spirit of something like the X Files - a present day backdrop with fantastic occurrences or one advanced gadget. The other stories present us with space ships, space colonies, or alien worlds, and considering there are nine different authors, the yield in quality is high. One or two of the stories have aspects of the silly, but even those have some interesting ideas in them - and again, the Vinge story alone was worth my time and money. This is a very entertaining read, and a good escape. It's one of the first anthologies of Science Fiction I had been exposed to in my youth, and I'm afraid it spoiled me a bit.
The Best Sci-Fi Anthology I've Ever Read!
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 21 years ago
Love 3000 is a collection of Science-Fiction Love Stories. As unusual as it may sound to mix romance with Sci-Fi, the two actually make a very excellent combination. Every story was worth reading unlike many other Sci-Fi anthologies I've read where there are good stories but there are also some really boring ones. The 2 best stories were Child By Chronos by Charles L. Harness and Tin Soldier by Joan D. Vinge. I felt really attached to the characters in these stories and was dying to know what would happen next. The rest of the stories were very good, but the Harness and Vinge stories were so exceptional that I was compelled to search for other works by both authors. Another thing I really liked about the anthology was the introductions that the editors wrote for each story. These introductions were very insightful, and added to my enjoyment of each story. I felt sad when I finished reading the book because I knew it would be very hard for me to find another anthology out there that was as good, and so far I have been right.
