Lost Civilizations from Bill Harris resurrects people, writings, treasures, monuments and all else lying between nature and society that has all but disappeared over time. This compact book breathes life into once thriving and unique people and places, which have largely vanished. Equally well, Harris uncovers information on those lost entities that remain today, where little meaningful understanding of their past grandeur has previously existed. Pithy vignettes give the reader a nice overview of many of the well known mysteries, such as the structures at Great Zimbabwe, and some of the not so common, like the Chavin of South America. Harris' piece is well written and a delight to read. I received this book as a gift for my classroom and I highly recommend it for curious youths. It will make an excellent addition to any educator's personal library for instruction, research or for student pleasure reading.
