A fairy tale

Entertaining - dark side of the fairy tales. A bit too slow (some parts) but enjoyable nevertheless.

FromJ. Kaye's Book Blog

There is an ancient bond between unicorns and virgin maidens. It is how men hunted these beautiful creatures before they fled to the safety of Tir-na-Nog. The unicorns have lived so long in peace; they no longer remember their power or ability to fight. Now a rebel, Caibre, has threatened to overthrow Lord Oberson. Caibre deceit has condemned Arion, King of the Unicorns, to a life as a human by Lord Oberson's ruling. The only way to be a unicorn again will be to help the person he detests the most. Caibre. Lord Donnington traveled to America to woo Mariah Marron. But no sooner did he carry her back to England and marry her did he leave her and on her wedding night at that without consummating the marriage vows. It's when Lady Mariah Donnington stumbles across a prisoner on the Donnington estate who bears a striking resemblance to her husband that the real mystery begins. Caibre is seeking Mariah as a bride, but using Arion to draw her closer to Tir-na-Nog so that he may keep her prisoner. As Arion's attraction becomes stronger, he finds it harder to deceive Mariah. The story is a tangled web of love, deceit, and facing your fears. I was drawn to this book for two reasons. First, I was looking for a paranormal romance that was unique. What sealed the deal was the book's cover. I hate to be so shallow, but this one would have been hard to resist no matter what the content. Lucky for me, the inside was as good as the outside.

Beautiful Story

I was very interested in reading this book for two reasons: I had never read a fantasy romance where the hero was a unicorn and I had never read anything by this author. I liked this book. The plot was suspenseful with lots of secrets held by all, the romance sensual, and the sex scenes, while few, were in harmony with the plot and Mariah/Ash's relationship. While reading Lord of Legends, the one theme that kept resonating within my mind first from Mariah's, then later Ash's actions, was sacrifice. When you truly love someone; family, friends, lovers or spouses what would you be willing to give up for their ultimate health and happiness? Give up your freedom, chances at marriage, could you even turn your back on them and let them go? Tough questions that Susan Krinard weaved beautifully into the story. Looking forward to the next installment that tells Sinjin's story.

Fantasy Romance

This fantasy romance is set in Victorian England. It mixes fantasy and romance and adventure into a fun read. A young woman from America marries a title to satisfy her father. But there are many hidden secrets that she will have to uncover before she can find happiness. She is left untouched on her wedding night and her husband leaves the next day. What did she do wrong? He never came to her room so she knows she never refused him. There is a reason she was left untouched. Arion is the king of the Unicorns. He has no memory, the iron around him has harmed that part of him, and any part of him that touches the bars is burned. He must learn who and what he is, then why he has been imprisoned. Mariah took care of her mother until she died. She had heard voices and seen things others did not see, so she was sent to an insane asylem. Mariah begs her father to let her dying mother stay at home and let Mariah take care of her. He agrees if Mariah will marry his choice she can take care of her dying mother. His choice is Lord Donnington. They leave for England and they are married there. Mariah is left in the country where she finally finds the hidden prisoner during one of her long walks. She doesn't know who he is but he looks exactly like her husband and she thinks he is locked away because he is insane. She has great sympathy for those like her mother. Mariah finally must enlist the aid of her husband's brother, St. John, or Sinjin as he is called. The story is driven by Ash's attraction to Mariah. Mariah has a great attraction to Ash as well. She is part of the fairy world because one of her ancestors must have been one of the fane. I liked the way the story moved and revealed the secrets that control both of them. I enjoyed the book and recommend it.

engaging historical romantic fantasy

In 1885 the Earl of Donnington meets and courts American heiress Mariah Marron. He wins her heart and they marry. They move onto his estate, but he never claims his conjugal rights to her shock. Exploring her new home, Mariah finds a semi-naked male locked in a cell. She tries to help Ash, as she names her husband's prisoner, as much as she can. Her husband's explanations make no sense to the American. She spends time with her Ash and he soon learns to speak. As he heals encouraged by the tender Mariah, Ash regains his memories. He knows he is King Arion a unicorn who must go home. To do so means betraying the woman who cared for him when he was not much more than a beast; the woman he loves and who is in peril from her spouse who sought her out because of her mythical connection that Mariah is unaware of. Filled with twists, LORD OF LEGENDS is an engaging historical romantic fantasy starring a caring heroine who is betrayed by the males in her life. The story line is fast-paced once Mariah and Ash meet and never slows down even with several spins although the ending is way over the top of Big Ben. Fans will enjoy this late Victorian rooting for Mariah, but have monster doubts about Ash and no second thoughts about Donnington. Harriet Klausner
