Book Overview

The first novel in a chilling new series by Darren Shan, author of the New York Times bestselling Cirque Du Freak series, will keep readers turning page after horrifying page. Grubbs Grady has stiff red hair and is a little big for his age, which means he can get into R-rated movies. He hates history and loves bacon, rats, and playing tricks on his squeamish older sister. When he opts out of a family weekend trip, he never guesses that he is about...

Such a Great Intro to the Series

Darren does such a good job at building main character, Grubbs, that you’ll feel like you just ‘know’ him. Full of horrifying demons, gut wrenching loss, and action packed twists and turns, Lord Loss will reel you into the demonata in the first few chapters.

A reluctant reader must-have or candidate for censorship?

I recently read this book and was transfixed by the fast-moving plot. Literally, I began reading the book late in the evening and was unable to put it down until I finished. That said, don't buy this book on the basis of it being written by the same author of the Cirque du Freak series. In my opinion, it bears little resemblence to the Cirque du Freak books, which are a much lighter horror book than Lord Loss. Lord Loss is extremely gruesome. In the second chapter, the main character Grubbs comes home to find his father hanging headless from the ceiling, his mother being ripped apart by a demon, and his sister's butchered body being animated by a second demon. The lord of these demons, Lord Loss, sets the two "familiars" upon Grubbs who must fight for his life. The remainder of the book is Grubbs' struggle to regain sanity and another spine-tingling battle with the demons. In addition, Lord Loss contains a great deal more profanity than any of the Cirque du Freak books, although it is limited to h--- and d---. That said, I thought the book was excellent although NOT for younger readers. I teach fifth grade and am quite comfortable having the Cirque du Freak books on my shelf, but I would NOT place this book there. However, like the Cirque du Freak books, reluctant readers would be riveted by this book as well, and they would be appropriate for, say, ninth or tenth grade up. This review is grudgingly given because I can't believe I'm saying a book about demons is appropriate for kids of any age. However, the reasoning behind WHY the demons have been set loose upon people was unexpected and quite interesting.

Great book

This book is great. It is so intense that you never want to put it down. This book isn't that gory, the only real nasty stuff is in the beginning. Darren shan is by far the best author i have ever read. His Cirque Du Freak books are awsome too.

An excellent, albeit morbid, read

As always, Darren Shan's writing is intense and deeply moving, and above all believable. Told from a first-person point of view, you really see the heart and soul of Grubb, an average, broody adolescent who suddenly finds his whole life changed in one horrifying, terrible night. The cast of characters is small, but there are enough people for the characters to interact well with each other, giving the reader the ability to really see each and every character in-depth. Overall, a spellbinding book. I look forward to reading the second of the Demonata series.

PURE GOLD

this book is pure greatness...It is about a boy named Grubbs Grady who finds out that 3 evil demons had slaughtered his family leaving them crushed up into pure blood and gore...The Demonata series is neat because each book can be read as a stand alone book meaning you dont have to read it as a continuous series... this book is scary and gory!!!...bloody (which is a good thing) (for me)...if u had not read this book, i strongly reccomend u to buy it...its heart pounding/nerve racking...REAALY GOOD..THUMBS UP...5 STARS
