This is the Februrary,2002 novel in the Longarm Western Series. Most of the story takes place in Wyoming near Buffalo and Sheridan and Greybull, at the foothills of the Bighorn ountains. Longarm has been sent out to apprehend Bull Stennett and his gang of owlhoots who have been robbing stagecoaches. This had been a local affair until several pouches belonging to the US Postal Service had been snatched. That makes it a federal matter and a job for Deputy US Marshal Curtis Long. This is a good old, true to form, western with lots of action.A pair of Witches, an aunt and niece, make an interesting twist to the tale. There are several colorful characters and lots of shoot-outs and struggles.Longarm and a posse seem to have an unusual amount of bad luck in their chase. Never mind the Witches, Longarm begins to wonder if his boss Billy Vail hasn't put a hex on him,for something Longarm did back in Denver. The story is well written and moves along at a good clip. However;the style of the writer is all business and has less of the great lines and "talk" we often find in this series. Also, there is little in the way of tie-in to the history of the time or much about the cuontry where it takes place.Overall,a good fast moving story;but nothing much else. "In order to do that,a man had to be able to move silently,to strike fast when he needed to,and to kill without hesitation."
