This episode was published in June 2003;but that doesn't much matter,'cause these older Westerns are as good a read now,as when they first came out. This is an excellent tale of the Old West that is largely set about 70 miles south of Tuscon, Arizona. That would place it just about around present day Nogales. The little town of Spur,Ariz, and the little town of Chili don't appear on the map,nor did I hear of them when I was there a few years ago.Maybe they are long gone, swallowed up by other towns,or never actually existed. However ,there were plenty of little places like them along the border and probably just as rough. Longarm gets a rough assignment to find out who murdered 3 Arizona Rangers along with a fellow Lawman, and bring them to justice. After getting his wound ,from a previous assignment, looked after,in a not too unpleasant manner, he was on his was to Tuscon,Arizona. Longarm has learned how to make the best of taveling in these early days of western travel, and this trip was no exception. However;once in Tuscon ,the partying is over and the serious business of a Lawman begins. Here we get a fast-moving story, filled with all kinds of action,shoot-outs,and hand- to- hand fighting. It is a fast moving saga, with some of the wildest characters you can imagine ,and a story of survival at the hands of owlhoots, both, male and female, who think nothing of killing anyone who gets in their way--and Lawmen are no exception. We get a good idea of how tough exposure can be when you get stranded in the desert, lost, naked, without horses, weapons or water, and wounded; while Vultures soar overhead awaiting your demise. How's this for some real good descriptive writing? "He glanced up at the sun and then back at a flock of ravaging buzzards. He should have tried to bury the human remains, but it was far too late for that and he couldn't spare the time or the energy. By tomorrow, the bones of the three dead men would be picked clean leaving only enough for the ants and the insects." Some of the episodes in this long running series ar better than others. This is by far one of the better ones.
