"This was one train he wasn't going to miss."

This November 1996 episode of the Longarm series may have a few wiskers on it;but it is as good as they get. This series has been running since October 1978.Yeah,that's 30 years this month and there have been ,in the main,a lot of excellent yarns. There have been a number of different writers who have authored the episodes under the name of Tabor Evans;therefore resulting in very different writing styles. I think it is a shame that the readers have never,to my knowledge, been told who the actual writers were;because I for one, often wondered. In this episode we see a distinct difference. Very soon into the story the reader is surprised by a few things. The writer talks about Longarm smoking cigarillos instead of two for a nickle cheroots and lighting them with a match instead of a lucifer. Then he talks about Longarm carrying his .44 in his holster on his side, when we all know Longarm favored a cross-draw.Then he talks about Longarm keeping his derringer in the back if his belt buckle instead of at the end of his watch fob in his vest pocket.Oh well, just some of the little things long time readers are quick to notice. Another thing that comes through in this episode is that Longarm is shown to be much more gullible and even careless than we have come to know him.He would never have survived this long if he was prone to be conned in to being led into the trap he was, then letting himself be led into the ranch house, not knowing what to expect inside;and after having handed over his gun, letting someone get behind him with a gun,and to top it all off with having left his trusty derringer back in his hotel in his valise.Later on, when he takes the Judge to see Sasrah in the hotel room,he forgets about the gun there. This is so unlike the Longarm we all have come to know. However, all that aside ,the writer has crafted a well written story that holds one's interest from start to finish. The real good thing about this episode is that it doesn't fall back on mystery or suspense;but stays with a direct pursuit of a known crook and is filled with action and excitement than convoluted mystery. In spite of some of the things I have mentioned;I enjoyed this one as much as any of the many I have read.
