Book Overview

So much for happy trails. Longarm shows up in the rock-breakers' town of Happiness with a nasty knife wound courtesy of the prisoner he's lugging--and finds two poor hombres swinging, the constable missing, a cryptic note, and a whole heap of unanswered questions.

Mel glanced toward the door."Colder'n a grave digger's a-- out there."

My title is from a quote on page 127. This is not a particularly common expression but appeared in the last western I wrote a review for;"The Trailsman- Beyond Squaw Creek #316.see my review on May 17,2008.Only in that case it was used to tell how dead an owlhoot was ,rather than the state of the weather.Perhaps it was the same writer who wrote both episodes? This episode all takes place in one place;Happiness,Colorado.Longarm finally makes it here, almost frozen, wounded and with a vicious killer prisoner in tow. It doesn't take long before things turn real nasty in this sleepy little town.It seems that everyone he encounters seems quite content with the way things are running;but soon Longarm finds out that there is more evil taking place than one can imagine;and it's hard to find anyone who is not involved in it. We soon find we are involved with lots of fast action and shootings, soiled doves, crooked lawmen and businessmen who have had things their own way for far too "long"...that is until another Long gets involved...Deputy Marshal Curtis Long, that is! "Longarm rose from his crouch, levered another shell into the Winchester's breech, and drilled two more slugs through the big man's chest, sending him flying straight back down the porch steps and into the street washed with the blood of the four other dead men."...and Longarm's still got some matters to clean up!!!
