This episode is quite different than most in that Longarm has a sidekick in his search for the armys stolen payroll.Whether he wants it or not the bank robbers daughter accompanies him and surprisingly they end up in being a very effective team. The hunt for the gold leads them into a very unusual canyon and an even more unusual hiding spot. They manage to find it;but there are several attempts by others to keep them from it. A surprising development at the end makes this somewhat predictable conclusion very interesting. The storyline is straight forward and there are some good characters. There is not much in the way of local history and we don't get much in the way of Old West towns, saloons or even shootouts, but a good tale, nonthe less. Too bad a great opportunity for some good artwork of the canyon on the book's cover was missed.
A great entry into this series

The action comes thick and fast in this Longarm tale as he searches for a long missing army payroll. This might just be hidden in Sweetwater Canyon. From the word go someone is out to stop Longarm getting to the canyon. Once there Longarm finds himself in a range war and Sweetwater Canyon is part of the land being fought for. There's plenty of suspects in the well drawn characters that Longarm meets during his hunt for the payroll. Anyone of them could be behind the attempts on his life and I didn't guess who that was as the identity is kept well hidden until TE was ready to reveal who it is.Once you think the investigation is closed TE springs a sting in the tale that I didn't see coming that rounds the book off well.Another great story, the best Longarm I've read for some time, well worth checking out!
