First Book in a Great Foley Trilogy of Nam Novels

I have read all 3 books in the trilogy and I found them all to be fascinating. This is Lt. Hollister's first tour in de Nam and the Rangers are just beginning to develop the LRP tactics they will use and refine as the war goes on for insertions, ambushes, prisoner snatches and extractions. The flavor of that early period of the war comes thru loud and clear: the winning attitude of our troops, the unreliability of the South Viets, the elation of having survived an insertion and extraction, the courage of the helo pilots (slicks & guns both), the loss of good men for a cause they don't really understand, etc. I would recommend that you read not only this book but his next two about Hollister's 2nd and 3rd tours as well. A lot of information on the work that goes behind staging an operation is contained in this book and the main characters are well developed. A good book on leadership training as well. Overall I highly recommend it.

The Long Patrol

The Long Patrol is book ten of the Redwall Series. It is another great book by Brian Jacques. The Long Patrol follows the basic Redwall plot line but as always has many variations. It is well written and one of my favorite Redwall books. Jacques does a good job providing details and describing the settings and characters. Tamello "Tammo" De Fformelo Tussock is a young hare who wants to join the legendary Long Patrol. His father thinks he is too young but his mother disagrees. When a family friend, Russa Nodrey, comes to visit his mother asks her to take him to Salamandatron where he can join the Long Patrol. Tammo learns many things while traveling with Russa including how to fight. Their long journey was made considerably shorter when they met a portion of the Long Patrol who was looking for a vermin army. Tammo joins the Long Patrol as they head toward Redwall. When they get there they see that the South wall of the Abbey is crumbling, unfortunately so does a member of the Rapscallion army. He tells the rest of the army and they head for an attack. Lady Cregga Rose Eyes, the ruler of Salamandatron, learned of the armies whereabouts she took the rest of the Long Patrol and when to fight them. Her army, the Rapscallion army, and the Redwall army meet and the rift and the battle begins. There is much bloodshed from all three armies.

This book is a must-read for anyone interested in Vietnam!

This book is a must-read for anyone intersted in the Vietnam War. Highly authentic, and written in great detail, this book is the best Vietnam war book I have ever read!!
