This Novel Will Make You Think Twice Before Undergoing Surgery!

In his debut novel, Mike Esposito pulls his readers into a Tampa, Florida hospital, compelling them to follow the horrendous tomfoolery of three greedy and devious doctors and a slimy attorney that will make you think twice before undergoing surgery, particularly neurosurgery. The principal protagonist, neuroradiologist John Armstrong, is having a barrel full of domestic problems. His wife Ashley has a voracious spending appetite that is driving them into bankruptcy, and unbeknown to John, she is having an affair. His daughter Amanda has cerebral palsy, which John attributes the cause to his faulty interference with the decision of the gynecologist, who delivered her. To alleviate some of his financial problems, John unethically passes on information pertaining to potential mal practice suits to his college roommate Cal Burton, who is a very competent malpractice attorney. As an example, whenever John becomes aware of an error committed by one of his colleagues, he notifies Burton who follows up with the patient or his or her family. Generally, the cases are settled out of court and John receives a ten percent cut of the settlement. John is not alone in this scheme, and as he is soon discovers, two other doctors from his hospital, neurosurgeon Robert Norman and pathologist Bill Wolfe are also in cahoots with Burton. Matters really get out of hand when these doctors decide to manipulate MRI and pathology exam reports in order to create lawsuits for Burton wherein they would receive a slice of some huge settlements. Their rationalizations were based on their contentions that in most instances these patients would die anyways, even if their diagnosis hadn't been altered, and after all, the money is coming from the pockets of the insurance companies. However, when perfectly normal patients are subjected to unnecessary brain surgery, we are dealing with something very different and exceedingly difficult to stomach. And what if this story had actually transpired? Is it actually possible to manipulate MRI results and create tumors where none existed? Locked In is an absorbing tale yet at the same time quite disturbing and rough on a reader with its persistent darkness. Moreover, it may seem unfathomable to think that doctors could be so careless to perform useless operations. However, it is a known fact that there are surgeons who, all for the almighty buck, perform useless operations from the more minor routinely- performed tonsillectomies of the past to the invasive heart procedures, hysterectomies, back surgeries and more. Locked in is well researched and splendidly recreates the story's place with issues that are certainly pressing and need to be addressed such as integrity of physicians, greed and corruptness in the world of medicine, trust in your doctor, bad apples in the world of surgeons, and in general the American health care system. First there was Tom Clancy and W.E.B. Griffin and now Mike Esposito

I am a big fan of Tom Clancy and W.E.B. Griffiin's books. The reason I enjoy reading books by these 2 gentlemen, is that they spare no expense in their research to write the books and the plots and characters they come up with are exceptional. 'Locked In' by Mike Espisito follows this pattern, the research was extenstive, the characters fun to follow and relate to, and the plot exciting. I enjoyed following the characters thru the tangled web they created for themselves. The plot was exciting and the conclusion does not leave you hanging nor wanting, except of course another book by this author. If you enjoy reading books by Tom Clancy and W.E.B. Griffin, then you are like me and will also enjoy this book and author as well.

The book was a fantastic read. The surprising plot twists not only made it very difficult to put the book down, they were also very thought provoking on many levels.

Fascinating and Compelling Medical Thriller

O'boy. Someone handed me this book and said it was good. Wow, was it! I'm not one to read much thriller fiction, but with the medical slant on malpractice issues I thought I would give it a go. I got emotional tied to the lead character and then thrown for a loop as he crossed over to the 'dark side.' I felt his pain of being trapped in circumstances that were both out of his control and created by his own actions. Dr. Michele Esposito, as his bio reads, "has spent ten years as a private practice radiologist in the Tampa Bay area, and uses his vast experience to give readers an insider's view of medicine and malpractice law." Make me wonder how close to truth this story really could be...and that's a sign of great fiction!
