An Excellent Resource

As with previous editions, this volume is an invaluable resource for any and all who are involved in preparing for the weekend and festal liturgies. The commentaries are good as a resource for homiletics and just simple meditation and the resources for all the various ministries are excellent. I get this each year and find it an invaluable tool! - Fr. John William Sheley

A Dignified and Important Ministry

Here is a concise, easy-to-use resource designed to help extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion prepare for their duties during liturgy or visits to the sick and homebound. The introductory material explains the history of the ministry, emphasizing its service to those cut off by infirmity from attending parish liturgical celebrations. The text consists of two-page entries for each Sunday and a number of special feasts. The entries include a short summary of the Gospel, opening prayer, gospel text, reflection, question relating the ministry to the gospel message, and closing prayer. The material, drawn from the popular annual "Living Liturgy" series, stresses the dignity and importance of this ministry. It would be a suitable gift for parish staff to offer as a sign of appreciation. There's even a page in the front for an inscription.

Premier Liturgical Resource

Year in and year out, Living Liturgy delivers quality resources for planners, "visible" ministers, catechists, parents, teachers, and others. A tear-off bookmark inside the front cover contains suggestions for using the book in small groups and for individual daily prayer based on the liturgical readings. The authors open with a general overview of the Gospel of Luke, the primary focus of Year C, while emphasizing the difference between scripture study and liturgical celebration: "The liturgy is not a forum in which we present the Gospel; instead, the Gospel is placed at the service of the liturgy...." Each week's entry begins with a two-page spread on spirituality containing the Gospel reading, commentary, background, and connections to current culture. A sidebar highlights brief reflections for faith-sharing groups; presiders and deacons; and music ministers, lectors and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. The next two pages contain the text of the opening prayer, first reading, responsorial psalm, and second reading. Liturgical elements and notes for music ministers are also addressed. Back matter includes biblical and liturgical indexes and appendixes containing choral settings for the general intercessions and a pronunciation guide. The comprehensive content and inviting layout of Living Liturgy make it a premier liturgical resource.
