I still have my copy of this book and have to read it almost nightly now to my little one. The story is about a little snowman who basically brings joy to a small town. On the first snowfall, a little boy brings the Littlest Snowman back to life who then goes around having fun with all his snowpeople friends. However, the thermometer goes up and along with it, go all his friends. The Red Cross is brought in to try and save the littlest snowman, which they do, just in time for a "strong north wind" to rip through the town on Christmas Eve. There's no snow in sight though and the weatherman is having a crying jag because of it. So, the littlest snowman stops by the ice cream factory, eats a ton of it, then grabs a chair to sit on top of the largest Christmas tree in the center of town. By doing so, the wind blows the snowman all over town, in various shades of pink, blue, green, etc. in time for Christmas Day. But, the townspeople cannot do without the littlest snowman so they go about on Christmas day scraping up all the white snow they can find and they recreate him and place him back up on his perch on top of the town's Christmas tree. There he sits all Christmas day and week and the town can hear his candy heart beat all over town. It beats "I Love You Truly," which to to townspeople, is another way of saying Merry Christmas. Great, great book which is now being passed down to the next generation. Highly recommend if you can find one!
