Cats are mammals. Mammals are animals that have hair or fur. A female mammal carries her babies inside her body until they are born. Newborn mammals drink milk from their mother's body. Some cats are little. Some cats are big.
A clear, well-organized book full of interesting, well-integrated information about all kinds of cats. Did you know that cougars are classified as "little cats"? Do you know why? The first section of the book covers the cat family in general (cat family tree, anatomical features, habitats, food, raising kittens), while the second covers small wild cats in more detail (bobcat, jaguarundi, ocelot, fishing cat, serval, etc.). Illustrations are primarily color photographs, of good quality and relevant to their subjects. This is a great research tool for elementary kids. Kindergarteners and most first-graders will need considerable help reading the text. The table of contents should locate most information, but there's also a good index and a short glossary. The final page provides additional information about each illustration in the book. The authors' attention to organization, detail, and precision make them good examples for kids doing science projects and book reports. This is a wonderful just-for-fun book for cat lovers, too. See also the "Big Cats" book by the same authors, which is is equally good.
