A Must-Have for English Teachers!

Teri and Michael Gamble's Literature Alive! presents workable ideas for awakening people's interest in literature. Designed as a tool for individuals preparing to present literature through oral interpretation, the ideas apply to teachers, librarians, storytellers, actors, and parents. Exercises suggest ways to connect to a literary text through physical and vocal means. Chapters are devoted to various types of literature (descriptive prose, narrative prose, drama, and poetry) and to different audience venues (children to adult). Not only does the content enhance a reader's ability to convey meaning, an educator can teach the techniques in a classroom in order to facilitate students' understanding and appreciation of the written word. The book includes outstanding literary samples for practice and application, the excerpts spanning the ages, covering all genres, and reflecting cultural diversity. When I recommend this book to my own teacher friends and students, I half-jokingly say that I love this book so much I sleep with it under my pillow. Now, that's devotion! It is a great tool.
