Turning Darkness into Light!

Delicate Torture: Living PoeticallyIn this work of art, the author tells the story of his sorted past through a series of poetic renderings that leave the reader breathless & on the edge of their seat in utter anticipation of what's next?! The author tells of the loss of innocence through the death of his little brother, kidnapping of his little sister, brutal child abuse by his mother, & the incarceration & deportation of his father from the United States. Kanaan paints an important picture of what it is like to be the genetic inheritor of Cherokee & Palestinian blood, a sort of mid-east meets mid-west in terms of the tragedy & displacement of both peoples. But Kanaan reminds us that no matter what happens to you in life, no matter how badly the world treats you, or how many cruel & judgmental comments the world throws at you, that you must never give up, because if he can make it through all of that, & still believe that the world can be beautiful, then so can you! The later section of the book is a kama sutra like love story of how poetry, & love making helps one realize that what the world needs more of is tenderness, to treat every one we meet in life with the same kindness & passion as we would our own true love. Deep calls unto deep, & these words will call out to you to be the catalyst for your own revolution of living.

He truly is beautiful inside and out...

I have gotten to meet Kanaan and I havnt been the same since he is an amazing human being that will always be and after he dies people will still talk about how he inspired us all! He has taught me to embrace all my pain that hurt me so... i learned to live life to the fullist and i will and i always keep Kanaan in my heart because of that!

I was offended, then I was entranced, then I understood.

Listen folks, when I first started reading this book I have to be honest, I was offended. I thought this author to be arrogant, self-centered, and just plain egotistical. But as I really gave the book the time and attention it deserved I found him to be a compassionate, intense, and inspiring writer. The here are surface things that get you to thinking, and it really strikes a cord in you, but the underlying meaning of the book is truly engaging and reader oriented. By the time I had finished the book I found myself crying, laughing, and saying "Yes!" out loud. It truly was an inspiration. I even called the author (since his number is in the book introduction) and actually answered the phone! We had a very interesting conversation about Literati, and even about myself. Kanaan is a real person, and in a sea of unreal authors it is nice to know that there is still someone out there who wants to change the world for the better, and who is willing to be available to this audience. Thanks Kanaan. Keep up the good work.

It was like a movie for the mind.

Once or twice in a lifetime you read something that really has a profound effect on you... Literati is such a book. It is written in such a way as to draw the reader into the world being written. Kanaan provides his home phone number, and his personal e-mail address on the first page of the book and challenges his readers to contact him, to discuss the ideas and thoughts expressed and embodied by Literati. That is a bold move! How refreshing to read something so personal, so real, and so genuine. I felt completely engaged by the style of writing, and the ideas though not all in line with my own, are well articulated and created with such passion that they become wonderfully infectious. If I had to recommend any of the books that I have read in my life, this one would be among the top five. If you're looking for something different, something that challenges you, or something to make you feel beyond yourself, then this book is for you. If you are easily offended, or unable to be exposed to new ideas and new ways of thinking, then this book is not for you... either way, it's sure to make you think!
