Weapons collection programmes in countries affected by conflict situations seek to ensure the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) of ex-combatants, in order to avoid a relapse into organised violence or the growth of illicit activities. This publication highlights some of the key findings drawn from UNIDIR research projects carried out in Albania, Cambodia and Mali which were designed to promote participatory community-based development projects in exchange for the surrender of small arms and light weapons. It identifies key methodological issues and guidelines for future policy, research and best practices for weapons collection programmes.
