Though now a beautifully produced paperback or hardcover, I first saw this book in its original photocopied form at least six years ago. The original was selling in a small organic restaurant in northern California Redwoods country, and there were already hundreds of loyal readers. (I pictured people discovering this book on their way to a camping trip in the redwoods, then reading aloud from it to their companions around a campfire that evening.) One of the lines I love from the book also describes how the writings call us to listen more carefully to nature: "Once in a while, there is a voice, so humanlike that I have to stop any other conversation and say, 'Wait,' and listen." One wonders--no, perhaps we know for certain--we would not be facing the challenges of global warming had we, in fact, stopped to listen to the silence. I recommend this book to any reader who seeks tranquility in nature.
