Great book. I'd recommend it to beginners

Even advance users like myself can pick up a trick from this book. But it is targetted toward newbies who maybe interested in becoming an intermediate user. The layout is excellent as well as it's content. The author knows how to keep you attached to the topic.

Very well written and comprehensive

Linux+ In Depth is a well written book that starts off exploring basics so fundemental that a reader should already be familiar with them if they are planning to take this test. Beyond that, the writing style flows well and keeps you reading. Ultimately the nearly 700 page book progresses into much more advanced topics. I recommend this study guide to anyone planning to sit the Linux+ exam.

Excellent starter book

I have not read any Thomson Course Technology books before this one and if this is any indication of the overall quality, I will consider them as future resources. As it is with Linux+ In Depth, Eckert and Schitka create a book that is an enjoyable read for those starting out in the realm of Linux and in the process help facilitate your endeavor to attain CompTIA's Linux+ certification. I thought the book definitely hit its target audience and aligns itself perfectly with CompTIA's aims...entry level professionals and beginning Linux admins. If you plan on diving in deeper, a must have book to further ground your knowledge is Running Linux by M.Welsh (O'Reilly).However, if you're largely experienced with *nix, you won't find anything new here. The authors do not really get into various real-world, critical services such as Squid, Apache and Samba.

They weren't lying when they said "In Depth"

What can I say?Been using linux for 3 years and I actually learnt stuff from this book. It being in depth doesn't mean its lengthy and technical because it isn't. Just under 600 pages including illustrations makes this an easy read.Passing the exam was a breeze with the extra knowledge I got and allowed me to score a confident 815 out of 900. Not bad after litteraly finishing the exam in 40 min.

Good enough

I've just passed my Linux+ test with score 860 out of 900 today. Overall this book is okay if you already got many background in maintaining Linux System, but if you don't have a broad background in maintaining Linux system, you may need to use several additional books, for example this book is lacking some information about some commands, such as 'netstat', which was on my test. This book is also lacking some stuffs that may need some fixes on the next edition of this book such as NIS/YP, hardware stuffs, and some scenarios (with files operations, network operations, etc.) which may help those who don't have strong Linux background.Anyhow, I've been maintaining and using many of *NIX flavors such as Linux (Slackware, Redhat, Debian, Mandrake, SuSE), FreeBSD, Sun Solaris, HP-UX servers for at least 3 years by now, so my comments may be a little bias.
