A Clear, Practical Synthesis

I had to respond to the student review posted here...I was a math professor for many years, and taught both linear algebra and differential equations to many students. Now I work in industry, where linear algebra and differential equations are everyday tools. These two subjects must be integrated if they are to be properly understood. Their intricate interaction is where all of the action is. Unfortunately, many undergraduates still experience these subjects as distinct; worse, they are presented with cookbooks for solving nothing but very specialized problem types. Cullen's book makes none of these mistakes, presenting instead many realistic problems within a clearly constructed conceptual framework. He gradually brings out general patterns and broadly useful techniques. It is an excellent introduction to the subject as it is actually used, and I would recommend it to any student looking for something more than solutions to this evening's homework assignment.
