An intelligent account of a privileged woman facing her mortality

I remember reading at some point that Charles Bronson and his wife Jill Ireland were among the wealthiest people in Hollywood, if not the world -- well that was 20 or 30 years ago. Jill Ireland, who discovered at age 48 that she had breast cancer, reports on the experience with exceptional candor and insight; and her celebrity status adds irony to the story -- her wealth and her powerful husband were instantly rendered helpless against the disease. But she recounts the details of her life and her approach to her illness with considerable intelligence and humor. Especially affecting are her observations about the tyranny of possessions -- and about other peoples' reaction to her suddenly vulnerable status. She was a lady of considerable spirit, and her story is well worth reading.

A wonderful memoir

Yes, to answer the other reviewer's questions, she did pass from cancer eventually, however she wrote another book, called "Life Lines" a few years after the publication of this book, Life Wish. I adored reading about Jill and her struggles, and yes, being wealthy can certainly afford you some help around the house, but it by no means makes it any easier to face cancer. I am amazed that people still think money makes everything all better! Jill, wherever you are, thank you for the book. :)

Inspiring, did she eventually die of cancer?

I'm captured by Jill Ireland's honesty and selflessness. I'd like to read her sequel.
