Good read on life in the water for kids

The Time-Life series, "A Child's First Library of Learning," is a good resource for kids. This is another entry in that series, focusing on life in the water. At the outset, I'll reiterate what I've said about other volumes in this series--it would be nice of the first entry placed the whole book into context. This volume is based around a series of questions and their answers. But, as with many in this series, the first question kind of comes out of nowhere: "Why do fish have scales"? Should not the opening questions place the volume in a larger context? Anyhow, that said, this will be a good book for young readers. Sample questions, to give a sense of the coverage: "Why do we put water plants in a goldfish bowl"? "Why do crabs walk sideways"? "Can a shell grow larger"? "Do mermaids really exist"? "Why do frogs croak"? The work concludes with a special feature characteristic of the series, an interactive Q-A with the young reader. E.g., what is a water animal and what is not, with pictures of several different animals? I do prefer the DK series, "Eyewitness Books," but this is still a good set of books for young readers. I bought quite a few of these for my son when he was young, and I never regretted the investment.

My second grader loves this book. It has lots of interesting pictures and cartoons that keep her interested. There's only a paragraph per answer so she doesn't get overwhelmed, and actually wants to read it.
