"Some things simply matter more than others," the author reminds us. Fundamental truths head the list. Paramount and central is "the doctrine of Christ, those foundational truths associated with the person and powers of Jesus the Messiah." Those pivotal truths are what this book is all about. Why are souls of so much worth in God's sight? Because of the infinite price our Savior paid for them, the author observes. The Fall was literal in its effects - a descent to "the natural man [who]is an enemy to God" - and only the Savior's infinite sacrifice could bring us the offer of reconcilliation with God in the elevation to the spiritual man. But the author notes that modern perspectives, often in the shape of virtues carried to excess, can inhibit the process. Thus, for example, inordinate self-reliance, individualism, and strivings for secular excellence can cause people to retain heavy burdens that reliance upon Christ would relieve them of both here and hereafter. The solution to the problems of sin and death, as indeed to those of all the ills of mankind, lies in the Savior's divine mission, in his atoning sacrifice, and in his resultant power to bring fallible mortals to a newness of life in him - spiritual rebirth. More than that, the author explains of this infinite and eternal God, "in the ultimate sense he alone can wipe away our tears, bind up the broken-hearted, and declare liberty to the captives." The transcendent position and power of the Lord Omnipitent is here depicted in reverent yet practical terms that inform and inspire the reader in his quest for a life in Christ. --- from book's dustjacket
