Having recently heard that the author's highly praised but little known other novel, Up, Down & Sideways, had been optioned by Hollywood, I picked up both that novel and this one and frankly was stunned at how funny, captivating, and ultimately moving these books are. In Life Between Wars, the author's ability to make a boy's experiences through a normal day in high school stand dramatically side-by-side with scenes of Vietnam combat and barroom brawls really captures, I think, the meaning and depth inherent in all of life's moments, from the quiet to the chaotic. This book has punch, a subtle spiritual awareness, and great sympathy for all manner of characters, from children to elderly, poor to wealthy, nihilistic to sweetly naive. Plus it's funny as hell.
