A Fine and Honest Writer

Fred Misurella is among the best of contemporary Italian American fiction writers. His stories appeal to everyone. His writing is honest and accessible, insightful and real. Misurella is an entertaining storyteller who keeps you turning the pages. Excellent craftsmanship. Delightful reading. Buy this little book and enjoy! Daniela Gioseffi, American Book Award Winning Author of 14 books of prose and poetry, Member of The National Book Critics Circle, Winner of the PEN American Center Short Fiction Prize, 199o, praises this book on its back cover and she is correct to recommend it so highly.

Author's Comment

I wrote the stories in this book, and I am obviously biased in favor of it, so let me quote a few other readers: "Lies to Live By tells the complex and sometimes secret truth about what it is to be alive in these complicated times. The eight stories in this collection are deep in their understanding and widely varied in their subject matter. Misurella writes in the clearest, precise prose, and has as his special strength the joining of shining intelligence with deep emotion."--Kent Haruf, author of Plainsong "All of Misurella's finely-drawn characters are 'crossing a bridge, preparing to pass through the doors of a new time zone.' Their journey from old-world neighborhoods into more modern times makes for delightful reading."--Rita Ciresi, author of Pink Slip "Fred Misurella ... is among the best of Italian-American male writers of fiction, the sort that our American culture should pay attention to as the tellers of the real stories of Italian-American life." --Daniela Gioseffi, editor of Women on War About Short Time (a novella that is part of the collection): "Fred Misurella adds a vital novella to the powerful literary tradition of soldiers returning home...: to immerse oneself in a story that's at once compressed and densely layered, yet utterly clear and wonderfully paced. The kind of story in which one wants to read every word (and does)."--Stuart Dybek, author of The Coast of Chicago
