LIARS by Sarah Manguso If you marry a terrible person, is it your fault the marriage doesn’t work out? This is just one of the questions the author poses in this novel. This story reminds me of those “AITA” threads on Reddit. Firstly, screw John. He can fall off a cliff. He was a walking red flag from the beginning. Secondly, I want to take Jane by the hand and say, “Girl, get it together!” Then there’s that other part of me that wants to say, “Welp, you FA now you’re gonna FO.” 🤷🏻‍♀️ This whole book was like a giant flashing neon sign alerting you to what could happen if/when you continue to dismiss red flags, ignore your gut instincts, and make terrible life decisions. I felt anxious, angry and hella annoyed reading/listening to this. While I do empathize and understand how people can fall into this type of situation, it is also *so* infuriating as a bystander. Gah! Would I recommend this? Yes. It’s well written and I was invested in this flawed couple like I knew them personally. This would make for a good book club pick because the discourse would be wild! Rating: 4/5 ⭐️
