The Most Revealing Book About Edna St. Vincent Millay

Surely, literary critics has agreed that "Vincent" (as she preferred to be addressed) - was a most fascinating, glamorous, yet complicated genius. If anyone was in large part responsible for creating the confessional genre in poetry (early 20th century) it was this genius. An intensely private person - and biographies cover this aspect of her persona. But her letters in this book read like a Journal or Diary. One could not get a finer view of one great American poet, feminist, political activist even when the latter took a tremendous toll on her health. For example, following her husband's death, she chose to cut herself off entirely from the world (even insofar as her own sister, Nora) - the letters tell why. A courageous soul whose work and life will never be forgotten. One can only hope that this magnificent work of art will come back into print. It reads like nothing else.
