TEXTBOOK FOR CANADIAN BABY BOOMERS

Coming from South Africa and working as family physician in Alberta, I have become more and more aware of the need (and lack of planning)for long term care amongst my patients and friends. The attitude of "the government has to look after me" still exists so strongly in our era. Waiting until grandparents get into a crisis is the most common scenario. My family and I were shocked into the reality of dependancy on health care services at home after a motor vehicle accident in January 2007, during which my wife fractured her pelvis. And we have discovered, as Patty Randall abruptly has, that there is nothing sexy about care at home and being dependant on health care services. I began my research on taking charge of our personal health and long term care planning for the future. This lead me to discover this amazing text book of Patty Randall - "Let's Talk - The Care-Years". Patty leads the reader (which should be every Baby Boomer in Canada) through the so called - "unexpected catastrophic parent crisis". We are all so guilty of not planning for our parents' and our own long term care needs. Patty doesn't only share her own experiences in this book, but she also provides so much information on her research. As physician I was very impressed with the endless contact information on websites, government support and different organizations that she provides. Patty covers all the basic steps (and much more) that each and every family in Canada should follow to prepare for the next four decades. I regard Patty's book to be life changing. This is "THE BOOK" for all Baby Boomers to read. This is your text book to plan sensibly for your future and retirement and to be in charge of your long term care years. Dr. Gordon S. Anderson
