A Dog's best friend!

I bought the book: I read the book in one evening. I have already applied several of Dale's techniques, to both well adjusted dogs and dogs with "emotional" difficulties, to a high level of success. I am a dog trainer who strives to become learned in just about every training technique available in the process of compiling and revising my own training methods. Having had the pleasure of witnessing Dale "in action" at his seminars and now having read the book, his techniques are by far the most user- and dog- friendly training methods available.

My Dog Loves this Book

This book offers a method of training based on understanding and motivating the dog. This unique training method has made working and living with my dog fun for myself AND my dog. It's great to have a dog that's excited to work and learn. A well written book with easy to follow directions.

Practical and effective tips work very well!

I highly recommend this book for anyone needing basic guidance on training their dog. Using the tips from the book I was able to get my boxer to sit, come, and stay in one afternoon. At first I was using a small pile of chopped up hot dogs, but now a treat is necessary only occasionally. Have faith in the author's suggestions, use them consistently with your dog, and you will see results.

Helpful and encouraging!

I think this is a great book that has simple guidelines to follow. It is encouraging and tremendously helpful!

Humane common sense that shows profound concern for both dogs and people

Dale Stavroff's discussion of adopting dogs from shelters exemplifies what a wonderful book this is. It is full of down-to-earth, authoritative advice that you won't find in any other dog training book. Noting the fact that a stay in even the best run shelter can be traumatic for a dog, he explains how to give such a dog the extra care and attention it needs. He also offers sensible guidelines for assessing whether you are a good candidate to adopt a dog from a shelter. Not everyone has the wherewithal to give a dog the extra TLC it can need after an experience in a shelter, and the rates at which adopted dogs are returned to shelters bears this out. For the right person, however, as Dale Stavroff encouragingly says, a shelter dog can be a great choice. When it comes to training a dog from a shelter, or a dog from a breeder, you couldn't ask for a better guide than Dale Stavroff. His uniquely effective (I've tried his methods and they work!), completely gentle training system is a gift to dogs and the people who love them.
