Lessons in Buoyancy: Letting Go of the Perfect Proverbs 31 Woman

A woman's life," says Kathy Vick, "is one gigantic act of buoyancy that requires a core of faith. It means believing that the same promise God made to Noah is offered to me." No matter how high the water or how insurmountable the task, if your security is in God, it's a sure thing. Of course first you have to go to the deep end and jump. wonderfully encouraging book

i thoroughly enjoyed this book and want to send it to all my christian friends who are struggling with their everyday walk as a mom or caregiver. this book made me laugh in some places and made me cry in others. i could just see myself in so many of her situations she describes. this book truly touched my heart and it will touch yours also. it is a book to be savoured as you read each chapter. i especially liked chapter 10 , "stillness, lessons in God's presence". i loved her poem she wrote herself: blow on this place, where i hide my fear, carry me gently, to a stream far from here. where your voice is the water, a sweet tide of peace. it rocks me and soothes me, every thought i release. remind me again, that you know i can fly? that i'll see things of heaven, if i open my eyes. in this stillness between us, i find the hush of your grace. as you give me the power to finish this race.

Funny, wise and real

Like a cool ocean breeze, Vick gently chides women's sometimes ridiculous efforts to measure up to the Proverbs 31 woman...like we don't have enough pressure in our lives as it is. I think most women have traveled through that self-created pit of comparison--and the subsequent self-loathing for our perceived "lack"--and I found myself cheering the author's honesty and transparency. I also really appreciated her depiction of sequencing in a woman's life--that there truly are seasons to be businesswomen, lovers, artists, mothers--and we don't have to accomplish it all by next Tuesday. This is a great book for the well-meaning overachiever on your list.
