The armchair way to get your experience

David Apostolico has done a masterful job of turning his experiences into a pleasant read and an excellent tutorial on no limit hold'em tournament play. Not only are the lessons presented in a lucid, easy-to-read fashion, but each lesson also presents a specific well-defined topic in the form of the story of how a specific hand was played. Today many argue that the online player can get the equivalent of a dozen years experience in only a few months because of the number of hands played. Unfortunately, this is simply not true. It isn't the number of hands played that is important - it is the number of hands carefully, thoughtfully analyzed. The road gamblers of 50 years ago learned by playing, but also equally importantly by REplaying hands in thought and discussion, analyzing them for insight into how to play the same or similar hands better. Apostolico presents just that sort of analysis, allowing the reader to vicariously gain experience from the tough play on the Professional Poker Tour. I believe any reader who takes the time not just to read the "hand stories", but to think through the play and analysis as presented will become a better player.
