Most HTML instructional books I've seen are closer to reference manuals than learning tools. If you want to learn how to build web pages from scratch using native HTML this is the book you should be looking at. This is the first book I've ever purchased on HTML - and it's still my most used. Though I learned it over many weekends, it was still just as effective. The lessons are the right length, and everything is explained very simply - but without oversimplifying or boring you. The files and (demo)programs on the disc are awesome.
