This is an early book by the successively well known author of The Red Thread, a book on sexuality in buddhism and of many works on Zen and Chan. The book is an overview on buddhism with many illustrations, which are really its highlight. The text seems to be an excuse for the beautiful illustrations. However, it is well divided in very short chapters with footnotes and legends that are integral part of the text. After the history of the diffusion of buddhism the author analyzes all the major and minor schools and scisms in all the countries reached by this highly diffuse asian religion. Zen/Chan buddhism is privileged maybe because of the author's specific interest.Reading the book cover to cover, which is difficult because of the fragmentary nature of the text, it is possibile to understand that the author has an encyclopedic knowledge of his matter. I find this kind of book pleasant to skim through and highly decorative for table top, but not very usefull for information. However many little curiosities can be satisfied and can lead to the research for deeper understanding.
