1972, hardcover edition, Viking Press, NY, 183 pages. A novel concerning a veterinarian in England's Lake Country, a very busy large-animal veterinarian. This description may be from another edition of this product.
An emotional story of a vet and his wife and children in the Lakeland area of England. I loved it although has some sad parts. Besides the usual veteranary practice (innoculations, spaying, wellness checks) Dai Evans treats numerous animals for illness, injury and abuse. He and his family end up adopting some of these animals and finding new homes for others. He has compassion for all the animals. This book reminded me of James Herriot's books, but is more intense. Dai is overworked and sometimes, exhausted. Meanwhile the government wants to flood the area to form a lake because the cities need more water. If the valley is flooded most of the farmers will lose their homes, and will have no where to go with their animals. He eventually hires another vet to help with some of the work. The story also includes his family life: Sheila, and his childen Tim, Mollie, Mark and Susie. And all of the animals have intriging personalities.
