A great novel about the Spanish Civil War

This novel tells the story of the General Antonio Escobar, colonel of the Guardia Civil (Spanish National Guard, kind of) at the beginning of the war in Barcelona. Told as an autobiography, it's related how even though he was a practicant catholic, he never broke his oath to be loyal to the Government. Winner of Premio Planeta, the most prestigious literary prize in Spain, it shows a very interesting picture of this black period of the Spanish history from the side of the defeated.
