I found myself unable to put the book down. When I finished, I read it again. I am sincerely supprised that this has not been made into a movie. The characters were so artfully created and realizing that the entire story is based in fact made it all the more captivating. The authors'colorful style made this a keeper.
A Book That Touches the Heart

I didn't think I would have much time to finish this book right away, but picked it up as something to read on the plane. Well, from that moment on, I could hardly put it down. I got so enwrapped in it I almost missed a connecting flight. Right from the first page when Sophia's dad gets out of prison my interest was quickly captured and retained. During the two days that I shared Sophia's life, I felt that I was transported to a world in Mexico that touched my deepest emotions. I would highly recommend this book, you won't be able to put it down!
An emotional journey towards hope for redemption.

I was captivated by the emotional roller-coaster I was taken on with Sophia. I was unable to put it down form cover to cover. The story of the tormented little girl taken from her jungle home of happiness and thrown into turmoil, made me want to jump into the book and save her myself. I am a 30 year old man, I read constantly and I seldom shed tears. I cried like a 2 year old baby for Sophia. Why hasn't the author and the LIVING Sophia been on Oprah or Rosie yet. Why is this such an obscure Book no one has heard of? I must know the rest of Sophia's story. Is there a second book to La Esmaralda? I found the Paperback in a restaurant at the Salt Lake City, Utah Intl' Airport 4/05/00 and I finished it befor landing in Portland, OR. Thank you...Emma Galvan for bringing this reality check to the world...When you feel you are having a tuff time...Just remember little Sophia and everything will fall into perspective. I'm Recomending this book to all my friends and relitaves and to any one who reads this review. This is what Academy Award Winning Movies are made of. Sincerely....
fascinating story with great psychological depth

For me, La Esmeralda reads like a thrilling novel. It is more remarkable still, because the events in the book are factual. I found the characters to be multidimensional and alive as I turned each page. There is food for thought here for counselors and for victims of abuse. Sophia, the main character, is abandoned as a child and physically and psychologically abused. It is amazing that she survives and triumphs in the end. I highly recommend La Esmeralda. It is deeply touching and inspirational.
I felt every emotion that Sophia went through, great book!

Emma Galvan has such an incredible ability to tell a true story and make you feel like you are pulled in and part of it. I went through every emotion that her main character Sophia went through. I honestly cannot wait to begin reading her second book!
