A creative alphabet to explore the library!

Children's writer Sonya Terry and illustrator Nicole Wong made the job of the school librarian just a tad easier when they created "L Is for Library." How? As school librarian, I like a library-related tool to open my classes each year on their first visit to the library. What better than a tool called "L is For Library"? This clever, creative book focuses on a little girl who, as Author, creates a cat as her main character, who falls out of the cherry tree George Washington is about to chop down in the Biography section. In the Caldecott section, the cat asks everyone to "Make way for kitties!" when the cat really must mean Duckies (you know, from Robert McCloskey's book)! One duckie and the cat (our main character, remember?) pull out books in the Dewey Decimal section "which helps us organize." Other duckies prefer books from the Encyclopedias and Fiction. Then the cat looks up "Catnip" in the dictionary , using Guide words. And so on with the illustrator and writer using the alphabet in making the library reveal its wares. But how will they end with Z unless they name someone? What could begin with a Z? If a cat is involved, why then, the cat must have some Zzzzzzzz's. The final two pages show the full use of the library according to the alphabet! That's why L is for Library!

A "must have" for your child

This masterfully written and beautifully illustrated book is perfect for teaching children about the library. The author uses a catchy rhythm and rhyme throughout that makes learning about many aspects of the library a shear delight. The illustrations cleverly reflect the text and the diversity of the world in which we live. My daughter had a renewed interest in visiting the library after reading it and I truly enjoy reading it to her.
