A clear concise blow by blow account...

An interesting account of the Night of Broken Glass which really kicked the holocaust into gear. This book provides an excellent account the initial assasination by a scared boy in Paris, Grynzspan, of a petty functionary Nazi: Ernst vom Rath. Read then details the dialogue within the Nazi party to initiate a night of fun for the SA. The uprising against the jews was carefully planned out as each local office, gau, issued detailed maps of jewish targets. It was then presented as a spontaneous uprising aganst the jews. Fire trucks watched synagoges burn, making sure the fires did not spread to nearby German buildings. The book is full of first person accounts, adding to the horror of having your life radically changed in an instant of state sponsored terror. Tens of thousands of jews were sent to concentration camps that evening in Nov of 38'. Over 2,500 perished. For a surprising contemporary read, check out Arhundathi Roy's "War Talk." She compares the savagery in the Gujarat region against the muslims to the Kristallnacht.
