First to Recognize Knowledge as an Engineered Venue

As the author of this book, is prudent on my part to note my pleasure and disappointment at the early recognition and eventual side-stepped usage of knowledge engineering. As water seeks its own level, bandwagon jumpers move from one technology to another. No one ever stated that knowledge engineering was easy or a be-and-end-all strategy. Knowledge engineering has its place for capturing and leveraging domain expertise. In today's climate for compliance, it has relevance and utility. Unfortunately, practitioner in expert systems, conditional branching forms, and various decision support systems are seeing push-back from groups that would benefit from these systems. Why? Once again, due to band-wagon technologies, promises of easy-to-use solutions, and reluctance to take the time of their experts, companies are preferring short-sighted benefit to long-term profit. So, if you have an interest in knowledge engineering present your case and share your findings with others that can help make a difference. [...] Regards, Steve Tuthill
