American Girl Kit Puts History into Context for Young Readers

This is of course about Kit, the 1930's girl who suddenly is faced w/ dramatic changes wrought by unthinkable economic Depression. In this volume, we follow Kit on several new short adventures. Lively and entertaining, each story has a "Looking Back" section enlarging on real-life history that relates directly to the tale with photos and information. American Girl stories have a theme: Ways any girl might have coped & felt is projected onto an endearing character help bond the young reader with a topic (history) that might not have much appeal at all for her otherwise. With so much glitz and Cheap inane Bratz-like merchandise mass marketed to impressionable girls these days, American Girls stories and products are one of the all-too-few wholesome & interesting products geared directly to girls between ages 7 - 12, the early grades. There is enough real drama and historical content to make each reading session a learning experience that is amazingly enjoyable. These are not preachy, a punishment to read, or boring - and neither is it Barbie goes to Victorian America. Do we REALLY want 10 & 11 year-old girls contemplating dressing up for dates and wearing Jessica Simpson outfits -albeit vicariously? Many of us don't, yet it has become the norm and we don't want to "deprive" our daughters. I firmly believe these materials can be used as a tool to help preserve and prolong what makes being a kid innocent & magical, rather than trying to rush them mentally into their teens & beyond. AG books are one of the best ways for young girls to gain an understanding of what life was like in America at several different points. These Short Story Collections infuse the original 6 stories about each historical character. These are not revisionist histories for adults (although charming & engaging) to dispute political vantage-points, although some think that's what is to be done with these. Instead, they're about growing up long ago. Same types of familiar emotions- while experiencing different things going on in the world, and not dumbed down. They are intelligent and discuss real things that have happened - a perfect jumping point for further and later independent study.
