I thought this book did an excellent job of making American History fun for kids to read! The character Kit-Cat takes a class of fifth graders on a wild and facsinating adventure into our nation's crucial moments. The illustrations and humor used throughout keep their attention, as well as any adult that reads it! Children get to learn how prayer has had an important influence on our country's heritage, and discover why our nation's leaders have always set a day aside every year as The National Day of Prayer. We were founded as a spiritual nation. Slowly over the years, we've been losing our connection to spirituality in our government and our schools, in an effort to "allow freedom of religion." I think an important quote from the book is from Albert Shanker, the President of The American Federation of Teachers. He says, "If students don't know anything about the religions that helped shape our cultural heritage, they'll have a very limited appreciation of that heritage. People of all political and religious persuasions agree that it's important to introduce teaching about religion into the curriculum." I couldn't agree more; I think we're witnessing the detrimental results of taking prayer out of schools. This book is an excellent tool for helping teachers re-establish this awareness in the classroom; through teaching about The National Day of Prayer as a history lesson. How clever and wise! I highly recommend this book to every fifth grade teacher!
