What a fantastic series!

I have long been a fan of Ms Holly and this book doesn't disappoint! She has taken her Upyr series and brought it up to another level. If you are already a fan you will love it, if you haven't read Ms Holly's work before this is a great book to jump into her work with. You don't have to read her previous Upyr books to read this one, yet once you have finished devouring the FitzClare Chronicles (which I did) you'll want to go back and read them.

Excellent!

One thing I love about Emma Holly's books is that she is able to mix sweetness with her erotica. Her characters can hop into bed from page one and keep getting it on every five pages, but I never feel as though their physical connection is just plain porn--every encounter deepens their emotional and mental connection with one another, and her hero and heroine just plain suit one another. This is found best in her latest, Kissing Midnight. This is one of her deliciously good Upyr series, but is also the first in a trilogy that follows the Fitz Clare family, which comprises Edmund, a upyr, his adopted human children, Graham, Ben and Sally, and Estelle Berenger, who has loved Edmund since she was fifteen. Unlike most paranormal romances AND most historical romances, the Fitz Clare trilogy is set in 1930s Britain, which makes for a completely different and exciting setting. There are little to no Americanisms present in this book, and Holly draws a wonderful portrait of interwar Britain and also weaves in upyr politics with the growing dangers of the period. Yes, there is a lot of sex in this book, and some may be disturbed with a certain element within the Fitz Clare family, but Holly is a consummate writer who can pull of just about anything I think. The pacing was quick, but measured enough to feel realistic, and though Kissing Midnight ends on a cliffhanger, enough threads are wrapped up to keep you from feeling disappointed that the story didn't end--in fact, I was more disappointed I couldn't get my hands on the next story in the series! Fans of Emma Holly, paranormal romance, and just plain good storytelling should pick this up immediately.

super historical urban romantic fantasy

In 1933 Edmund Fitz Clare conceals the fact that he is a shapeshifting upyr vampire from everyone. He hides his secret from the orphans he has adopted, from his best friend, and mostly concealing it from his buddy's daughter Estelle Berenger who he is attracted to. His goal is redemption to make up for nefarious deeds he once committed. He remains ignorant that Estelle hides her new odd abilities she gained ever since lightning hit her. In London, hostilities are growing amongst vampires. War seems imminent. To survive along with his wards, Edmund and Estelle will need to depend on one another. Togetherness in Bedford Square allows their attraction to become love. The latest "Midnight" historical urban romantic fantasy is a terrific tale that plays on several fronts including M15 Graham Fitz Clare's activities as well as the above. The story line is fast-paced, but even with paranormal species and elements, Emma Holly provides her audience with a strong sense of time and place. Edmund and Estelle are fabulous lead characters whose love seems impossible to turn into a relationship as time means something different for the pair. Ms. Holly writes another winner in her strong saga (see COURTING MIDNIGHT) Harriet Klausner

Fanfreakingtastic!

I have always been an Emma Holly fan, if her name is on it, I will buy it. So speaking as a die hard fan I will tell you that I feel like this series is a whole new wonderful direction for Ms Holly and I loved it! Kissing Midnight has been a wonderful addition to her Upyr series while having it's own identity. The previous reviewer gave you the synopsis so I won't do that. What I will tell you is that not only is this a love story between a man (well an Upyr) and a woman it's a family love story. The moments between Edmund and his children as well as the siblings relationship really tug at my heartstrings and those moments are so poignant that it sometimes brings tears to my eyes. That's what I love about Ms Holly, she brings the spice but she also brings the emotion. I couldn't put Kissing Midnight down (which made for a long night for me). There are very few books that give you a glow after you've read them but this does and left me breathless and waiting for her next book. Brava Ms Holly!
