Sheree Fitch's book made me cry. Once, it made me laugh out loud, a full rolling belly laugh, about an escapee vibrator and unexpected company. Most fun was the game of finding mentions of my hometown. (I went to high school with Sheree, although we were not acquainted.) Mercy Beth is a realistic character, so like many of us as we recognize our own mortality. She lies, and faces her lies in the raw honesty of a cancer scare. I'm left wondering what lies I too am telling to myself, and to those I love. I am reminded of the Velveteen Rabbit. It is our suffering that makes us real.
